Patent Information Centre (PIC)


Intellectual property rights (IPR) are conferring in respect of work those results from the creative and inventive activity of the human mind. The protection of intellectual property plays a key role in gaining an advantageous position in the competitive technological gain for achieving technological, industrial and economic growth of a country. The importance of patent information is being realized more and more all over the globe. The number of patents filed in a particular country has been an index of technological development of the country.

A Patent Information Centre (PIC), Gujarat has been set up under Gujarat Council on Science and Technology at Gandhinagar in collaboration with Patent Facilitation Centre, Technology Information, Forecasting & Assessment Council (TIFAC), Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, New Delhi This centre is providing regional level services regarding various Intellectual Property Rights. Patent Information Centre in collaboration with TIFAC is facilitating for the patent search and Patent registration for the Academic and Research Institutes. Patent Information Centre (PIC) is also providing general awareness on patent & specific issues related to other IPRs by organizing Seminar, Conference etc. and publication of Information material on Intellectual property Rights to create a strong IPR base in the state, to enhance the quality of Invention, innovation to increase the number of Intellectual Property Registration from the state. Patent Information Centre(PIC), GUJCOST have established IP facilitation Centre from the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises especially for MSMEs.


  • Creating awareness and understanding relating to patents and the challenges and opportunities in this area including arranging workshops, seminars, conferences etc.
  • Providing patenting facilities to scientists and technologists in the country for Indian and foreign patents on a sustained basis
  • Keeping a watch on developments in the area of IPR and make important issues known to policy makers Scientists, Industry etc.
  • Introducing patent information as a vital input in the process of promotion of R&D programmes.

Patent Information Centre (PIC), Gujarat has done significant work towards awareness of intellectual property rights by organizing and supporting various workshops and seminars on Intellectual Property Rights in collaboration with various universities, colleges and academic institutions. PIC, Gujarat has organized 21 such awareness workshops/seminars and sensitized about 4618 Faculties, scientists, technologists and policy makers from universities, R&D institutes and Industries. Out of 21 workshops 10 were supported by PFC, TIFAC, DST, New Delhi and remaining 11 workshops were financially supported by Gujarat Council on Science & Technology. PIC, Gujarat has undertaken following IPR related activities during the year 2010-11.

    Establishment of IPR Cells in Universities of the state

    For creating awareness and providing services on Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs), PIC Gujarat has identified five universities for opening IPR cells and established Intellectual Property Right Cells at different universities in Gujarat as given below.

    PIC Interactive Meeting

    The 13th PIC Interaction Meet was held at Guwahati, Assam under the chairmanship of Shri R. Saha, Director PFC, TIFAC, New Delhi on December 17-18, 2010. The meeting was coordinated by PIC, Assam Science, Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC). The meeting was attended by officials from PFC, different 11 State Patent Information Centre and officials of TDT Division from DST New Delhi. Prof. R.G. Motwani, Principle Scientific Officer & Mr. Bhavesh Mojidra, Project Scientist from GUJCOST has attended the meeting. The meeting was inaugurated by lighting of lamp by the Chairman, Shri R. Saha, Ex-Adviser DST & Director PFC. Mr. R.K. Barman, Principle Scientific Officer, Assam Science, Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC) welcomed all the delegates. Activity report of PIC, Gujarat of last twelve months was presented in the meeting by Prof. RG Motwani, Principal Scientific Officer, GUJCOST. He mentioned about the workshops on patents/IPR organized at Vadodra and Rajkot was organized by PIC, he also stated that the Intellectual Property Facilitation Centre for MSME has been established at PIC, Gujarat.

    Advanced Patent Search Report

    Request for Advanced Patent search report has been received on "HIGH SPEED DRYER” from the Vishvakarma Government Engineering College, Ahmedabad and Request for Patent Search on "Method of Up-gradation of Jatroha deoiled cake derived Bio-oil” received from Vidhya Bharti Trust Institute of Tech & Research center Umrekh, Dist. Surat, Gujarat and the same were forwarded to Patent Facilitation Centre, TIFAC, DST, GoI

    Patent Awareness Workshops

    GUJCOST has organized three day training programme on Updates on Intellectual Property Rights for the IPR Members of different state at the Gujarat Science City during 21st to 23rd August, 2013 by support of DST, Govt. of India.

    About 50 participants including Community Science Members & State Council members from different state have attend this training programme. The programme was inaugurated by Chief Guest Dr. Vinay B. Kamble, Former Director, Vigyan Prasar and Guest of Honour Er. Ravindra Gaur, Scientist D & MS (SSTP-LSR&TND), Ministry of Science and Technology, DST, Govt. of India.
