IP and Innovation Labs
Gujarat Council on Science and Technology (GUJCOST) has established IP and Innovation Labs across Gujarat to promote intellectual property awareness, innovation culture, student engagement, grassroots innovation identification and hands-on learning through district-level Community Science Centres.
About the IP and Innovation Lab
What is an IP and Innovation Lab?
An IP and Innovation Lab is a district-level facility created to encourage students, innovators, schools and community members to understand Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), identify innovative ideas and receive facilitation support for protecting intellectual property.
District-level presence
IP and Innovation Labs have been established at District Community Science Centres across 33 districts of Gujarat to provide local access to innovation and IPR-related awareness and support.
The IP and Innovation Lab acts as
- A district-level hub for IPR awareness and innovation promotion
- A facilitation point for identifying potential innovators
- A centre for student visits, demonstrations and hands-on learning
- A support platform for identifying grassroots innovators
- A local coordination point for potential IP and GI-related activities
Objectives
Promote IPR Awareness
To create awareness among students, teachers, innovators and the community regarding patents, trademarks, designs, copyrights, geographical indications and other forms of intellectual property.
Encourage Innovation
To encourage students and community members to convert creative ideas, projects and local solutions into meaningful innovations.
Identify Innovators
To identify potential student innovators, grassroots innovators and local products having intellectual property or geographical indication potential.
Support IP Filing
To coordinate with IPFC / PIC Cell of GUJCOST for facilitation of potential IP filings and further guidance.

- Conducting student visits to the IP and Innovation Lab

- Organizing student awareness programmes on Intellectual Property Rights
- Organizing community awareness programmes on Intellectual Property Rights

Facilities and Support
Innovation Lab Kits
The labs are equipped with innovation lab kits aligned with ATL-type learning activities, enabling students to experience hands-on innovation, model development and practical learning.
Training and Handholding
GUJCOST conducts training and capacity-building activities for IP Officers to strengthen their understanding of IPR, innovation identification and hands-on lab activities.
IP Filing Facilitation
Potential innovations identified through the labs may be coordinated with IPFC / PIC Cell of GUJCOST for further examination, guidance and filing support, wherever applicable.
District Outreach
The labs support district-level outreach through student visits, school programmes, community awareness activities and innovation identification drives.

How to Utilize the IP and Innovation Lab
For Schools and Students
- Contact the nearest District Community Science Centre / IP and Innovation Lab.
- Schedule a student visit, awareness session or hands-on lab activity.
- Share student projects or innovative ideas with the IP Officer.
- Receive basic guidance on innovation, IPR and possible protection of ideas.
For Innovators and Community Members
- Approach the district IP and Innovation Lab with details of the innovation or local product.
- Discuss the idea with the IP Officer for preliminary understanding and documentation.
- Where suitable, the matter may be coordinated with GUJCOST for further IP or GI-related facilitation.
- Participate in awareness programmes, workshops and innovation outreach activities.
